Experience Gippsland puts regional tourism on the map

The co-operative tourism marketing association between Latrobe City Council and Baw Baw and Wellington Shires, known as ‘Experience Gippsland’, has received a Certificate of Recognition at a prestigious awards ceremony held in Melbourne recently.

By Latrobe City Council - 24th July 2003 - Back to News

Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Graeme Middlemiss said that the award was presented for promotional work in the category of ‘Destination Promotion’ at the Country Victoria Tourism Council Regional Tourism Awards held at the Victorian Arts Centre in Melbourne.

"Through the enthusiasm of a dedicated group of people, working co-operatively to promote our region, the tourism potential of the Latrobe region has again been brought to prominence," Cr Middlemiss said.

"This award ceremony is very highly regarded within the tourism industry and is the forerunner to the Victorian Tourism Awards to be presented in November 2003. ‘Experience Gippsland’ was the only award winner in this highly competitive category, and was competing against other attractions in regional Victoria such as the Great Ocean Road and Ballarat," Cr Middlemiss said.

Latrobe’s Tourism Development Co-ordinator, Michelle Toppin said that

‘Experience Gippsland’ won the award because of their involvement in many promotional opportunities across the state and elsewhere.

"This includes the production of the twice-yearly official visitor guide and participation at major Victorian and interstate exhibitions. For example, to connect with the people most likely to be interested in touring the many beautiful civic gardens in the region, such as the Morwell Rose Garden or the Sale Botanic Gardens, we attended the Melbourne Flower Show and created significant interest," Ms Toppin explained.

"Our submission also highlighted the unique complementary product that the three municipalities combine to promote. By working together rather than competing, our region stands to benefit substantially more from increased tourism.

"We are able to offer the holidaymaker a tour of Baw Baw’s gourmet deli country, accommodate them in one of Latrobe City’s many hotels or motels and then suggest a leisurely drive down to Wellington’s stretch of the Ninety Mile Beach," Ms Toppin said.

"Alternatively, by promoting our product at the Sydney Caravan and Camping show we have shown the keen four-wheel driver that they can find exciting places to explore in our region such as coming down through the high country and onto Walhalla, the goldfields trail and the Avon Wilderness," Ms Toppin continued.

"Working together really is mutually beneficial, with Latrobe City being an excellent accommodation base for touring the other two municipalities," Ms Toppin added.

Receiving the award, presented by the Chief Executive Officer of Tourism Victoria, Lois Appleby and the Minister for Tourism John Pandazopoulos, Ms Toppin was pleased that the team effort had paid off.

"It is rewarding that this region, which has so much potential, is at last beginning to be given recognition through the co-operative work of ‘Experience Gippsland’," Ms Toppin concluded.
