The Nationals Member for Gippsland South, Danny O'Brien has congratulated the South Gippsland Shire Council for its strong advocacy in securing state funding for the Nyora Transport Infrastructure and Connectivity Study.

Danny O'Brien said the study is vital for Nyora's future transport planning, praising council's proactive approach to managing growth, safety, and connectivity

Planning for growth

Mr O'Brien said the study is an important step in planning for the town's future transport needs as Nyora continues to grow. "Nyora has seen enormous growth in recent years, and it's wonderful to see the Shire working with the state government to ensure the town's infrastructure keeps up. This is great advocacy from the council and recognition that good planning is needed to maintain safety and connectivity as our population expands."

According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, Nyora recorded 380 families and 506 dwellings in the 2011 Census. By 2021, that had grown to 447 families and 595 dwellings, with new housing developments ensuring that growth will continue.

Action beyond study

Mr O'Brien said while the study is a positive move, it must ultimately lead to action and investment from the State Government. "Local residents have been waiting too long for proper investment in South Gippsland's roads. The study will help identify the upgrades we need, but it will mean little unless the Allan Labor Government commits the funding to deliver them."

Mr O'Brien highlighted the long-delayed completion of stage two of the Leongatha Heavy Vehicle Alternate Route as an example of planning that has stalled without government commitment. "Stage one was completed back in 2017, but funding for stage two is desperately needed to address the dangerous intersection locals have dubbed 'kamikaze corner'. I'll continue to work alongside the South Gippsland Shire and local communities to push for the investment needed to make our roads safer and support our growing towns."
