Wellington Shire Council invites expressions of interest from girls, young women and people aged 12 to 18 years to contribute to the development of a new Master Plan for Lions Park, Sale. International research highlights a sharp decline in physical activity among adolescent girls. According to the World Health Organisation, approximately 85 per cent of teenage girls are not achieving the recommended levels of daily physical activity (WHO, 2022).

Youth park input

Contributing factors include changes during adolescence, competing academic demands, and reduced confidence in being active. Access to well-designed parks and open spaces has been shown to positively influence participation. Facilities such as walking paths, basketball courts, appropriate lighting, toilets, picnic areas, shade, and inclusive, welcoming environments encourage young people to engage in physical activity, spend more time outdoors, and use public spaces beyond school hours.

Council’s Open Space team is seeking input from young people to ensure Lions Park reflects these needs. A Focus Group of participants aged 12–18 years will be established to provide ideas on what makes public spaces safe, inclusive, and appealing. No prior experience is required - only a willingness to share perspectives and contribute to the design process.

Focus Group members will be invited to attend two to three interactive workshops in November 2025. These sessions will provide an opportunity to share ideas, explore design options, and influence the development of Lions Park’s facilities.

Have your say

Wellington Shire Council Mayor Cr Scott Rossetti said Council is determined to create a space that young people feel genuinely connected to. "We want Lions Park to be a place where young people feel safe, welcome and inspired. By hearing directly from girls, young women and people, we can make sure this park truly reflects their ideas and becomes somewhere they are proud to spend time with friends, be active and feel a strong sense of belonging."

Expressions of interest are open until Friday 17 October 2025 and can be submitted via Your Wellington Your Say website. This initiative aims to create a public space that promotes activity, social connection, inclusion, and a sense of belonging for young women and people across the Wellington community.
