Danny O’Brien says South Gippsland Highway receives constant patch-ups instead of proper, long-term investment

The Nationals Member for Gippsland South, Danny O’Brien says the South Gippsland Highway is being kept on life support with constant patch-ups instead of receiving the proper investment it clearly needs. Mr O’Brien was commenting after the Minister for Roads advised that 169 separate maintenance tasks have been carried out on the Leongatha–Korumburra section of the South Gippsland Highway since July.

Roads require investment

Mr O’Brien said, "The Minister’s response highlights the wastefulness of repeatedly fixing the same road with short-term, temporary measures. In just five months, crews have been called out 169 times on one, 15 kilometre section of the highway. That is not proper maintenance, it is evidence that the road was never repaired or funded correctly in the first place."

Mr O’Brien said the government has advised that works will be undertaken this summer at Stony Creek and through the Korumburra town centre, with a small amount of resealing also proposed. "Not enough resealing and rehabilitation has been undertaken on our roads. This could all be avoided if the Allan Labor Government invested properly in long-term repairs from the start."

Mr O’Brien, who is also the Shadow Minister for Roads and Road Safety, said figures from the independent Parliamentary Budget Office show Victoria is spending $1,500 less per kilometre on road maintenance than the national average. "The South Gippsland Highway is vital for our community, and we deserve a road that is built to last. It is clear that Labor can’t manage roads and Gippsland road-users are paying the price."
