Wellington Shire Council seeks feedback on the Domestic Animal Management Plan Review until 24 September 2025
Wellington Shire Council's draft Domestic Animal Management Plan outlines priorities for responsible pet ownership, safety, and welfare, inviting community feedback from 28 August to 24 September 2025.
Developed in line with the Domestic Animals Act 1994, the plan sets a clear framework to promote responsible pet ownership, keep the community safe, and support the welfare of companion animals over the next four years.

Key priorities in the draft plan include:
- Training for Authorised Officers
- Promoting responsible pet ownership
- Reducing overpopulation and euthanasia rates
- Supporting pet registration and identification
- Managing nuisance pets and dog attacks
- Regulating dangerous, menacing and restricted breeds
- Overseeing domestic animal businesses
- Planning for animals in emergencies
Wellington Shire Council Mayor, Cr Scott Rossetti said the plan reflects both the challenges and opportunities in managing domestic animals across the Shire. "We know that nearly half of households now own a dog, and a third own a cat. This plan responds to the real issues our community faces, from cost-of-living pressures affecting pet registration to the rise in dog attacks from escaped pets."
"It also acknowledges the critical role animals can play in times of crisis, offering support for those fleeing family or gender-based violence by including respite care for their pets," Cr Rossetti said

The draft plan is open for community feedback for 30 days from Thursday 28 August to Wednesday 24 September 2025. "We want to hear from residents, rescue groups, veterinary services, and anyone with an interest in local animal welfare," Cr Rossetti added.
Key stakeholders, including the Victorian Animal Aid Trust, Animal Welfare Victoria, and the RSPCA, are also encouraged to contribute. To read the draft plan and provide feedback, visit Your Wellington, Your Say website or contact council's Local Laws team on 1300 366 244.
