Wonthaggi's town centre is set for a vibrant transformation with a focus on history. Thanks to funding from the Victorian Government, Graham Street and McBride Avenue will soon be greener, brighter and more welcoming for everyone. This past week, the first of 24 modular planter boxes was installed along McBride Avenue, and 13 Crepe Myrtle trees are being planted on Graham Street.

Reimagining Wonthaggi together

Bass Coast Mayor, Cr Rochelle Halstead, said the projects mark an important step in delivering the vision for Wonthaggi as part of the Streetscapes Project. "These projects are all about reimagining our town centre as a place that celebrates Wonthaggi's character and heritage while creating spaces for people to enjoy."

"Thanks to the strong support of the Victorian Government, we're able to deliver streetscapes that not only look fantastic but also support local businesses by encouraging outdoor dining and improving pedestrian safety. This is an exciting time for Wonthaggi," Cr Halstead said.

Wonthaggi streetscape revitalisation

Bass Coast Civil began work in Graham Street in late August to deliver new tree pits and install advanced tree cell systems to support healthy growth. You may have noticed the tree pits being installed - they are surprisingly large, which will help the beautiful Crepe Myrtle trees thrive once planted.

Painted in "Manor Red" as a nod to Wonthaggi mining heritage and the iconic poppet head, the 24 planter boxes being installed on McBride Avenue will feature native, drought tolerant plants

In McBride Avenue, 24 planter boxes will feature native, drought-tolerant plants and are carefully positioned to create inviting outdoor dining areas while also acting as attractive barriers between pedestrians and vehicles. Contractors will maintain the plantings for the first year to ensure they thrive.

The Wonthaggi Streetscapes Project will reinvigorate the heart of Wonthaggi by blending its mining heritage with new life and greenery. These upgrades provide shade and beauty, encourage more people to spend time in the town centre, and make the streets safer and more accessible for everyone. Community, residents, businesses and other stakeholders will be kept up to date with the project via Engage Bass Coast website.
