The Nationals Member for Gippsland South, Danny O’Brien has called on the Allan Labor government to urgently commit to major repairs on the South Gippsland Highway. Speaking in Parliament, Mr O’Brien said he continues to receive growing complaints from locals as the condition of the highway deteriorates from one end of the electorate to the other.

Highway in disrepair

Mr O’Brien said, "The latest area of concern is the stretch from Foster to Yarram where the road surface is appalling. It is riddled with potholes, rough patches and failing repairs. People are rightly fed up with constant speed reductions being put in place simply because the Allan Labor Government has allowed the road to fall into disrepair."

Mr O’Brien said the problems extend right along the highway, including the heavily used Leongatha-Korumburra and Korumburra–Nyora sections. "This is the main arterial through Gippsland South and it is a slap in the face to see it allowed to get to this state. Locals, tourists, farmers and freight operators all rely on it, yet it is neglected year after year."

In Parliament, Mr O’Brien directly asked the Minister for Roads and Road Safety what works would be undertaken this summer. "With the busy holiday period approaching, our community deserves clear answers and a proper plan, not just more temporary patches and speed-limit drops." Mr O’Brien said he will continue to push for transparency on planned works and for the South Gippsland Highway to finally receive the investment it urgently needs.
