Wellington libraries upgrade with RFID technology, enabling faster borrowing and improved user experiences across all branches over six monthsWellington libraries are upgrading with RFID technology, introducing self-loan stations, automated return chutes, and smart bins, improving borrowing efficiency, reducing manual handling, and allowing staff to focus on programs and services. By news@gippsland - 9th October 2025 - Back to News Wellington Shire libraries are modernising its library network through a significant technology upgrade, thanks to a $200,000 grant from the Victorian Government’s Living Libraries Infrastructure Program. Over the next six months, every item across Wellington’s libraries will be equipped with new technology powered by Radio Frequency Identification (RFID), allowing them to be borrowed and returned more efficiently. The upgrade is designed to create a smoother, more user-friendly library experience while supporting staff to deliver more programs and personalised services. 
Visitors will enjoy self-loan stations, automated return chutes, and a smart bin, reducing manual handling, improving accuracy, and freeing staff for programs and community support Smarter library servicesAs part of the rollout, visitors will get to experience: - Self-loan stations at each branch so users can borrow items independently
- Automated return chutes at all libraries, including an additional chute at the Port of Sale
- "Smart bin" at Sale Library to handle high volumes of returns quickly and accurately
The new system reduces manual handling, improves accuracy, and speeds up circulation. Library staff will have more time to focus on customer support, literacy programs, and outreach services across smaller communities. Modern libraries upgradeWellington Shire Council Mayor Cr Scott Rossetti said the technology represents a significant investment in the future of library services. "This project brings our libraries in line with modern technology and reflects how people want to access services today. It’s about giving our residents a better experience - faster borrowing, smoother returns, and more time for staff to connect with visitors and run the programs that make our libraries such valued places," Cr Rossetti said. This rollout complements Wellington’s $354,200 annual allocation from the Victorian Government’s Public Libraries Funding Program for 2025/26, which supports collections, e-resources, outreach, free internet, and programs for all ages.
