The $2.7 million investment in new medical imaging technology at Bairnsdale Regional Health Service (BRHS) will deliver better outcomes for patients across East Gippsland, according to Federal Member for Gippsland Darren Chester. A centrepiece of the multimillion-dollar upgrade is a $1.5 million Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) unit, the first of its kind in Australia.

Advanced MRI installed

Currently being installed at Bairnsdale Hospital, Mr Chester inspected the world-class MRI scanner on site during a visit, where he also met with the BRHS team who will operate the new equipment. Mr Chester said the advanced technology would provide a major step forward in local health care.

"This cutting-edge machine will allow earlier and more accurate diagnoses for musculoskeletal, spinal, neurological and abdominal conditions. It will also reduce scan times, making the experience more comfortable for patients while enabling staff to better manage demand," Mr Chester said.

Investing in healthcare

The upgrade follows the recent announcement that 95 per cent of imaging procedures at BRHS will now be bulk billed, further reducing cost barriers for local families. "These investments will make a real difference for patients and staff, ensuring more people can access timely, affordable and high-quality health care close to home," Mr Chester said.

Mr Chester also congratulated the BRHS leadership team for their commitment to continually improving local services. "Bairnsdale Regional Health Service has a proud record of innovation, and this latest investment demonstrates their vision for meeting the growing health needs of our region. It was a privilege to tour the hospital and see the MRI scanner as installation gets underway," he said.
