Safe chemical disposal

Baw Baw Shire Mayor Councillor Kate Wilson is encouraging locals to make the most of the opportunity to clear their homes of harmful chemicals. "We are pleased to be partnering with Sustainability Victoria to give residents the opportunity to dispose of chemicals in a way that is safe, convenient and free. It is a great opportunity for residents to clear out any expired or unwanted chemicals and help keep our waterways and the environment free of damaging waste."

Common products such as weedkiller, pesticides, bleach, brake fluid and rat poison are all harmful to the environment and should not be placed in kerbside bins or poured down sinks. Common chemicals collected at Detox Your Home events include:

Cleaning

  • Acids and alkalis
  • Bleach
  • Rust remover
  • Hydrochloric acid
  • Oven cleaner

Garden

  • Fertiliser
  • Fuel (old lawn mower/power tools fuel)
  • Weed killers/herbicides
  • Insect sprays and pesticides
  • Pool chemicals

  • Coolant

  • Machine oil and lubricant

For the full list of chemicals accepted, visit Sustainability Victoria website. Detox Your Home no longer collects yellow halon fire extinguishers, cosmetics, empty aerosols and oils, including cooking oil. For more information on the disposal of these and other specialised items please visit the Specialised Waste Collections page on Council’s website.

Detox Your Home event

Paint is not accepted at this event. Paint tins (but not chemical containers), containing leftover paint, are accepted at Baw Baw Shire Council transfer stations at very nominal fees. Empty paint tins are free. Detox Your Home events are staffed by expert chemists who identify and sort the chemicals for safe transport back to a licensed facility in Melbourne where they are processed for reuse or safe disposal.

  • Date: Saturday 14 March 2026 from 9am to midday (12 noon)
  • Location: Baw Baw Shire Council Depot, 188 Normanby Street, Warragul
