Baw Baw Shire Council invites community to join Biodiversity Blitz and help shape first nature plan from 1-30 September 2025

Baw Baw Shire Council invites residents to celebrate Biodiversity Month by joining the Biodiversity Blitz, recording local species, attending walk-and-talk events, and contributing ideas to shape the region's first Nature Plan.

September is Biodiversity Month and to celebrate, Baw Baw Shire Council is taking part in the Biodiversity Blitz. You are invited to get involved and join Baw Baw's biggest citizen science project to date!

Celebrating local biodiversity

The Biodiversity Blitz is all about getting out in nature and recording as many native plant and animal species as possible during the month of September. The project isn't only fun, but helps identify the diverse flora, fauna, and fungi found in Baw Baw - plus you'll be flying the flag for Baw Baw and competing with other Shire's in a little friendly competition to see who can record the most species!

To make sure the community has the chance to come together to explore and celebrate the incredible flora and fauna of our region, Baw Baw Shire is also hosting two walk and talk events this biodiversity month.

Bring yourselves, your phones and cameras and get ready to talk about all things nature as you wander around some of our favourite biodiversity hot spots. This September, Baw Baw Shire Council is also seeking community input into developing its first Nature Plan.

Shaping nature's future

East Ward Councillor Kate Wilson recognises that community interest in environmental matters is increasing and encourages residents to share their thoughts on protecting and enhancing Baw Baw's natural environment.

"This new plan will play an important role in providing strategic direction in relation to the management, protection and enhancement of the council's natural environment. Once complete, it will help guide council and the work of community groups, agencies and volunteers and help ensure environmental work is supported and prioritised across the region," Cr Wilson said.

Join in a guided walking tour of local biodiversity hot spots:

Brooker Park, Warragul

• When: 10.30am - 12.00pm on Friday 5 September

Nangara Reserve, Jindivick

• When: 10.30am - 12.00pm on Saturday 20 September
• More information: Register for the Jindivick session via Humanitix website
