East Gippsland Shire Council is reminding pet owners that responsible pet ownership begins with registration - helping to keep pets safe, the community clean, and public spaces enjoyable for everyone. Registering pets not only ensures compliance with state legislation but also supports the quick and safe return of lost animals. Council’s Community Laws team offers registered pets a free return home the first time they are picked up by a ranger.

Mayor Cr John White said that registration and responsible pet management play an important role in community wellbeing.  "Registration gives pet owners peace of mind knowing that if their pet is found, it can be safely returned home. It also supports the work of our Community Laws officers and helps us maintain safe, pet-friendly spaces across East Gippsland," John said.

Council is also encouraging dog owners to be considerate when out walking their pets. "We often hear, ‘My dog just wants to say hi,’ but not every dog or person wants to interact," John said. "Some dogs are nervous, in training, or simply prefer space. Keeping dogs on a lead helps ensure walks are calm, safe, and stress-free for everyone," he said.

Pet owners are reminded to always collect and dispose of pet waste appropriately to help keep East Gippsland’s parks, paths and playgrounds clean and enjoyable for all. "Responsible pet ownership is about more than following the rules," John said. "It’s about caring for your animal, respecting others and contributing to a safe, pleasant community."
