At its September Council meeting, Latrobe City Council endorsed the release of its draft Streetscape Strategy for public submissions. The draft Latrobe City Streetscape Strategy (the draft Strategy) has been developed to enhance the visual, functional and environmental quality of streetscapes across the municipality.

The Strategy standardises street furniture and materials to enhance town identity, reduce maintenance costs, and expand tree canopy with minimal parking impact

Enhancing town streetscapes

An initial assessment of each town's main streets and Central Business District areas was undertaken to inform the draft Strategy. The draft Strategy identifies key long term cost saving opportunities and provides tailored recommendations to improve the overall quality and appearance of public spaces, focusing on areas such as increasing tree canopy, beautification of streetscapes, enhancing pedestrian and cyclist mobility, providing consistent street amenities across the municipality and efficient ongoing maintenance.

Latrobe City Council Mayor, Councillor Dale Harriman encouraged people to have their say on the draft Strategy. "Streetscapes can be fundamental in defining the functionality and aesthetic of a town. Cohesive streetscapes can enhance the walkability, safety, access and comfort for residents and visitors."

"Many of the current streetscape elements, such as benches, bins, bollards and paving are outdated or no longer fit for purpose. This aging infrastructure presents increasing challenges for ongoing maintenance.," said the Mayor.

Community feedback invited

Cr Harriman added, "It's important that we update the Streetscape Strategy, and we want to hear all community feedback before the Strategy is finalised and endorsed. Take the time to review the draft Strategy and submit any comments you may have."

The draft Strategy will inform future funding applications, capital improvement projects and ongoing maintenance and renewal activities for Council. Submissions can be made via Council's engagement platform, Have Your Say Latrobe City. Submissions close 5pm, Monday 20 October 2025.
