East Gippsland Shire Mayor, Cr Jodie Ashworth's Christmas message

A Christmas message celebrating East Gippsland’s community spirit, kindness and connection, encouraging care for one another, support for local businesses, warm hospitality for visitors, gratitude for workers this season together.

As we head into Christmas and the busy summer season, I’m reminded once again of what makes East Gippsland such a special place: our connectedness as families, neighbours and communities. This time of year gives us a chance to pause, reconnect and appreciate the people and places that shape our everyday lives.

Festive community spirit

Christmas looks a little different for everyone, but at its heart is the simple act of coming together - checking in on one another, sharing meals, stories and laughter, and extending kindness where it’s needed most. I encourage you to look out for neighbours, friends and anyone who may be doing it tough or spending Christmas alone. A small gesture really can make a big difference.

I also encourage you to support the locals as you shop, eat and explore this summer. Choosing local keeps money in our region, supports local jobs, strengthens families and helps our towns stay vibrant long after the holidays. The people behind our cafés, shops, galleries and visitor experiences work incredibly hard at this time of year, and they truly appreciate every customer who walks through their doors.

Over the coming weeks we’ll be welcoming thousands of visitors to East Gippsland. Let’s greet them with the warmth and hospitality our region is known for. Whether they’re here for our beaches, lakes, rivers, trails or town centres, every visitor contributes to our local economy and helps share the story of East Gippsland far beyond our boundaries.

Community holiday wishes

At Council, we’re guided by values that reflect the best of our community - respect, working together, doing the right thing and taking responsibility for the places we call home. These aren’t just words to us; they’re the way we show up for our community every day.

To everyone working through the festive season - in emergency services, health care, hospitality, retail, tourism, farming, transport, and across Council - thank you. Your dedication keeps our region running while others take a well-deserved break.

On behalf of my fellow Councillors and all Council staff, I wish you and your families a joyful, safe and connected Christmas, and a bright start to the New Year. May the season bring you rest, kindness and plenty of moments that remind you what matters most - and may your Christmas tree lights untangle more easily than mine did this year!
