Latrobe City Mayor, Cr Bruce Lougheed, said the State Government funding together with contributions from the Traralgon Lions Club and Latrobe City Council, would ensure that Newman Park becomes an even greater attraction for children.

"Once again, the Traralgon Lions Club has taken the initiative to make play more accessible for all our children, no matter what the child’s ability.

"The new playground equipment encourages children into adventurous play and role playing, which not only helps their physical development but generates social interaction among children. The great thing is that children of all abilities can join in the fun," Cr Lougheed said.

"I think we owe the Traralgon Lions Club a debt of gratitude for the initiative they have shown in the development of the facilities at Newman Park to date, and we’re extremely happy that Council is providing funding assistance to help this next stage of the park’s development get underway," Cr Lougheed added.

Lions Club spokesperson Alan Vickery, said the new equipment featured an access ramp into the heart of a castle complex, with various play experiences featured inside. "It is particularly aimed at the younger group of children aged 2-10 years," Mr Vickery explained.

"There are many slides leading from parts of the castle, and access points including safety steps and climbers that will appeal to the young. The equipment will add to the existing Liberty Swing and access for all playground area that attracts visitors from far and wide."

Mr Vickery said that the playground equipment would be installed by Lions Club members and the community under guidance from the playground supplier.

"Public support for the project to date has been overwhelming, with many volunteers turning out during stages of the playground’s development to help put equipment together and provide the facilities.

Councillor Peter Tyler said that the additional playground equipment enhanced the Newman Park experience for the community. "It’s another drawcard to what has already become a tremendous community asset," Cr Tyler said.

"In addition to the playground, the barbecue facilities, picnic facilities, and lovely shady trees that provide shade on hot summer days, make this a top destination for families here in the Latrobe Valley.

"However, it’s also important to stress that the access for all playground at Newman Park and the associated facilities, attract not only families from across the Latrobe Valley, but many families visiting from other parts of the state or driving through Gippsland on the Sydney-Melbourne route. It is regularly attracting five-hundred visitors a day," Cr Tyler added.
