By news@gippsland - 29th August 2025 - Back to News Baw Baw Shire Council is inviting community feedback on its Draft Roadside and Footpath Trading Policy. The Roadside and Footpath Trading Policy provides a framework for the use and management of footpath and roadside areas for trading activities. It aims to support local businesses by making our streets more vibrant, but also providing safe and unobstructed pedestrian access for pedestrians of all abilities. 
At a meeting on 27 August 2025, Baw Baw Shire Council resolved to release the draft Roadside and Footpath Trading Policy for community consultation from 29 August to 28 September 2025 During March and April this year, council asked traders and other stakeholders to share their thoughts on the current Policy and emerging issues with us, and from this initial round of consultation, a draft Policy has been developed. The draft Roadside and Footpath Trading Policy is open for community consultation on council's online engagement platform, Baw Baw Connect, from Friday 29 August to Sunday 28 September 2025. Shaping shared spacesBaw Baw Shire Council Mayor Councillor Danny Goss said the community could have their say by jumping onto Baw Baw Connect and filling in the survey or making a written submission online. "We know how important our public spaces are for businesses, but also everyone in our community." "Some of the key changes in the draft Policy include a requirement for a minimum footpath width of 2.5 metres for footpath trading to be considered and requirements around heaters, planter boxes and umbrellas." "This draft policy is about finding the right balance between exciting street activity and ensuring safe, accessible footpaths so we encourage you to review the draft policy and help shape how our shared spaces are used," Cr Goss said.
