Planning Bass Coast's future

The SPP establishes a 50-year vision for Bass Coast's future, setting clear settlement boundaries across 24 townships including:

  • Cowes
  • San Remo
  • Grantville
  • Cape Paterson
  • Kilcunda

It ensures that the Bass Coast's natural environment, cultural heritage, and local character are protected while guiding sustainable growth and development.

The decision, approved by the Governor in council, locks in the protected town boundaries for many of our towns and includes a range of recommendations to enhance neighbourhood character. Importantly, the policy also recognises the importance of the Western Port Woodlands.

Protecting Western Port

Bass Coast Mayor, Cr Rochelle Halstead, said the protections are a milestone achievement for the community. "This is a significant moment for Bass Coast, one that reflects years of collaboration, advocacy and community passion."

"The Western Port Woodlands are one of Victoria's last remaining coastal forests and an ecological treasure. To see them recognised and protected through this policy is something our community should be very proud of. The declaration acknowledges what locals have always known, that Bass Coast is special. These long-term protections will help us preserve our environment, our townships and our way of life for generations to come."

"Council is currently seeking state government support to complete further environmental assessments that will ultimately lead to greater protection of the Woodlands. We hope that the state will come to the table and assist the council with this process," Cr Halstead said.
