Princes Highway $2M upgrade improves safety and access for pedestrians at Lakes Entrance and KalimnaNearly $2 million in joint government funding will upgrade Princes Highway at Lakes Entrance and Kalimna, improving pedestrian safety, access, and traffic flow with new medians, lighting, safety platforms, and path reconstruction. By news@gippsland - 22nd September 2025 - Back to News The Albanese and Allan Labor governments are delivering smoother and safer journeys around Lakes Entrance and Kalimna as upgrades to a key intersection along the Princes Highway get underway. Sections of Kalimna Path will be reconstructed and surfaced, with safety barriers, pedestrian fencing and drainage also being upgraded as part of the works.
The $2 million project, jointly funded by Albanese and Allan governments, enhances pedestrian access and active transport, finishing by year's end Highway safety improvementsConcrete medians and two raised safety platforms will be installed to slow vehicles down where pedestrians are crossing. New lighting will be installed and the current pedestrian refuge will be upgraded, which will improve safety for all road users. The Princes Highway at the intersection of Lookout Road and Hotel Road will also have the painted centre islands replaced. The works totalling nearly $2 million have been funded by both governments, with the Albanese government investing $1.58 million and the Allan government contributing nearly $400,000 towards the project. The improved access for pedestrians will promote active transport for the local community and for visitors to the area. Works are expected to be completed by the end of the year - weather permitting. Notice on any further traffic changes as the project progresses will be provided to the local community. Kalimna safety upgradesActing Federal Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government Minister Julie Collins said, "We're providing better and safer links for all road users so that everyone can enjoy the scenic lookouts on the southern side of the Princes Highway in Kalimna." Victorian Minister for Roads and Road Safety Melissa Horne said, "Safety is at the forefront of these improvements. By building a concrete refuge and raising safety platforms on the Princes Highway, we're improving safety for pedestrians wishing to cross the highway." Senator for Victoria Raff Ciccone said, "We know many people use Kalimna Path as pedestrian access across the North Arm bridge between Lakes Entrance and Kalimna, and these improvements are making it safer for them to do so." Member for Eastern Victoria Tom McIntosh said, "The Albanese and Allan Labor governments are working together to deliver these important works for Gippsland - making roads safer, smoother and more enjoyable for locals and visitors alike."
