Sarsfield Fire Brigade launches fundraiser to support Yarck bushfire recovery efforts on 10 February to 10 March 2026

The Sarsfield Rural Fire Brigade has launched a fundraiser supporting Yarck bushfire recovery, collecting fencing materials, tools, and donations to help residents rebuild and protect livestock after January’s fires.

The Sarsfield Rural Fire Brigade has launched a community fundraiser to support residents of Yarck and surrounding districts following the destructive bushfires that swept through the region last month. The initiative provides an opportunity for the Sarsfield community to give back, after Victorians rallied to support Sarsfield during the catastrophic 2019-20 fire season. Brigade members say the generosity shown to them during that time was overwhelming, and now is the moment to return the favour.

Yarck fire appeal

Sarsfield CFA Brigade Secretary Brian, a former Yarck resident, said the impact of the recent fires was deeply personal. "There were plenty of tears and heartache as we saw online that beautiful Yarck and the surrounding countryside we knew so well had been devastated by the January fires."

"That the village itself was saved by the dedicated efforts of fellow firefighters and local volunteers was some relief, but we knew that so many local folk had lost it all. It was heartbreaking to see, even at a distance," Brian said.

From 10 February to 10 March, community members can support the appeal by purchasing fencing materials or hand tools at rural supply stores in Bairnsdale, including BrownWigg, Elders, Goodmans and Gippsland Treated Pine. Items such as fencing posts, wire, shovels, and rakes will be donated directly to recovery efforts in the Yarck district, where they are urgently needed.

For those unable to visit participating stores in person, QR codes are available to facilitate direct financial donations. These can be found on the Sarsfield Fire Brigade's Facebook page, with printed versions also located at various sites across the region. Funds raised will be used to purchase essential materials for affected landholders.

Boundary fencing remains one of the most critical early recovery needs following bushfires, helping protect livestock and enabling farmers to begin rebuilding. "As the Sarsfield community knows, it's imperative that boundary fences are restored quickly. We want to assist the Yarck community to begin their recovery and rebuilding process," Brian said.

Local business Buchan Towing has generously offered to transport all donated materials. Deliveries will be made to Yarck CFA on 14 March, where items will be distributed to residents in need. The Sarsfield Rural Fire Brigade is encouraging locals to get involved and show their support for a community facing the long road to recovery.
