Band honours history

The Menin Gate stands in honour of more than 6,000 Australian soldiers who died in the Ypres Salient during World War I and have no known grave. As part of their tour, the City of Traralgon Band took part in the nightly Last Post Ceremony at the Menin Gate - an event that has occurred every evening at 8pm since 1928. In a particularly moving moment, the crowd broke from tradition to applaud the band after their performance of Waltzing Matilda.

The Mayor congratulated the Band on their achievements and the significance of their commemorative journey. "This photograph is a powerful reminder of the connection between our local community and the shared history we honour."

"Council is proud to have supported the Band on this meaningful international tour, and we acknowledge the dedication and professionalism they displayed on the world stage," said the Mayor. A Latrobe City Council grant assisted 60 band members to travel abroad, where they participated in a series of events, performances and commemorations, and were recognised with two performance awards during the tour.
