Promoting accessible public and community transport in Gippsland

South Gippsland Shire Council will be promoting accessible public and community transport with a range of accessible vehicles on display at its International Day of People with a DisAbility celebrations on Friday 3 December.

Celebrations will be held in the car parking area of Coal Creek Heritage Village in Korumburra from 11am – 2pm and will feature a sausage sizzle and light refreshments, plus live music by ‘It’s Only Paranoia’ from 11am –1pm. Everyone is welcome to join in the celebrations.

As well, a transport booklet entitled "Gippslanders Travelling Together" will be widely distributed. The booklet provides information about public transport services in Gippsland, the level of accessibility of these services and the contact details of organisations that can assist people to use public and community transport.

"A Disability Awareness Quiz will also be distributed on the day. People are invited to answer the questions and go into a draw for fantastic prizes donated by businesses from across Gippsland." said Kathryn Pryor, RuralAccess Project Officer for South Gippsland Shire Council.

" We’re hoping for a great response from the community."

Designated by the United Nations, activities are held world-wide on this annual day of recognition to acknowledge the valued contribution people with a disability make to their community, and to highlight ways of making our community more accessible and inclusive.

Access to public and community transport for people with a disability has increased in recent years, although there is still some way to go before all transport is fully accessible.

In South Gippsland shire, Western Road Lines (WRL) P/L taxi services are currently awaiting delivery of a new maxi taxi, and Eldred’s Coach Tours, Gippsland Bus Services, and V/Line provide wheelchair access on some of their routes.

Council provides a Community Transport service within the shire for residents with disabilities and the frail and aged who have no other means of transport. Council’s Community Bus has a lowered electric step to assist people with limited mobility.

"Many residents and visitors to the shire may not be aware of the range of accessible public and community transport options available. International Day of People with a DisAbility provides a great opportunity to publicise these options and promote their use," said Ms Pryor.

If you would like more information on International Day of People with a DisAbility or would like to join in the celebrations, please contact Denise Trani (for catering purposes) at 5662 9289 or TTY 5662 9210.
