Darren Chester secures $20,000 to preserve Tambo Valley trenches commemorating Victoria's WWII history

Darren Chester secured $20,000 funding to preserve the historic Tambo Valley Trenches, enhancing access, safety, and interpretation, while honouring East Gippsland's wartime history and boosting cultural tourism along the Great Alpine Road.

Federal Member for Gippsland Darren Chester has secured funding for the Tambo Valley Trenches project, which will preserve and protect one of Victoria's most unique and World War II defence sites. Mr Chester announced the project has received $20,000 through the Stronger Communities Program, helping volunteers continue their work to conserve the site and develop it as an interpretive memorial for locals and visitors.

Historic trenches preserved

Mr Chester said, "Located just south of Ensay on the Great Alpine Road, the Tambo Valley Trenches were constructed by members of the 13th Battalion Volunteer Defence Corps during World War II as part of Australia's inland defence network."

"This is a rare and historically significant site and it is believed to be the only surviving trench complex of its kind in Victoria. It includes fighting pits, sentry posts, communication trenches, and what is thought to be a command post and storage area.

"Until recently, the site was largely forgotten, but thanks to the dedication of local volunteers, it has been recognised for its historical importance and added to the Victorian Heritage Register in October 2023," Mr Chester said.

Commemoration project launched

The project aims to complement the existing memorial and open the trench site to the public as a place of commemoration and education. Planned works include improved access, walking tracks, boardwalks, viewing platforms, safety rails and interpretive signage. Mr Chester said the Stronger Communities Program funding would help volunteers achieve their goal of creating a lasting and respectful memorial.

"This is an opportunity to highlight East Gippsland's military history, commemorate those who served, and ensure that younger generations can understand the real threat of invasion that local communities faced during the war years."

"The project will also become an important stopping point for the many thousands of people who travel the iconic Great Alpine Road each year, adding to the cultural and tourism appeal of our region. I congratulate all the volunteers and local organisations who have committed so much time and energy to this project. Their passion will ensure that the sacrifices and efforts of past generations are not forgotten Historic Trenches Preserved," Mr Chester said.
