Martin Cameron demands action as data reveals dangerous one-star safety ratings on Latrobe Valley roads

Nationals MP Martin Cameron has condemned the poor safety of Latrobe Valley roads, after state data revealed many key routes rated one or two stars, demanding urgent government action.

The Nationals' Member for Morwell, Martin Cameron, has raised alarm after new state government data revealed many local roads in the Latrobe Valley are rated just one or two stars for safety. The independent AusRAP system shows that the lower the star rating, the higher the risk of serious injury or fatalities.

Martin Cameron says Labor has neglected regional roads, with 91% rated poor and safety worsening despite repeated promises of maintenance blitzes and government action

Regional roads neglected

Worryingly, several key routes in the region are among the lowest rated at just one star, including:

  • Moe/Newborough - John Field Drive and Moe-Walhalla Road
  • Yallourn North - Latrobe River Road and Tanjil East Road
  • Morwell - Latrobe Road
  • Churchill/Hazelwood North - Hazelwood Road, Sanders Road, Boldings Road and Brodribb Road
  • Traralgon - Traralgon Creek Road
  • Glengarry - Glengarry West Road

Mr Cameron said the results are proof that regional roads have been left behind. "Labor's own data shows 91 per cent of roads surveyed were in poor or very poor condition, and no amount of spin can disguise the fact Labor has abandoned roads in regional Victoria."

Regional roads crisis

Mr Cameron added, "Every year for the past seven years, Labor has promised a road maintenance blitz. "If there's a road maintenance blitz every year, why are our roads crumbling and getting worse? Why are 'rough surface' signs everywhere across regional Victoria?"

"People in the Latrobe Valley deserve action, not empty promises. These findings are confronting, and the government can't keep ignoring them. Every delay means more lives are being put at risk. Labor can't manage road safety, and regional Victorians are paying the price," he said.
