East Gippsland Shire Council is seeking community feedback on its 2026 - 2029 Domestic Animal Management Plan to improve pet ownership, safety, education, and balance between animals, people, and shared spaces.
East Gippsland Shire Council is inviting community feedback on the Domestic Animal Management Plan 2026 - 2029. This plan plays an important role in shaping how we manage domestic animals across the Shire.

Managing domestic animals
The Domestic Animal Management Plan aims to:
- Promote responsible pet ownership
- Protect the community from nuisance or feral animals
- Support pet owners with education, services, and resources
- Ensure a balance between pets, people, wildlife, and shared spaces
Mayor John White said the plan is a valuable document for both pet owners and those without pets. "Domestic animals play a big role in many of our lives, so it's vital that the community helps shape how we manage them. The plan covers everything from how we respond to animal attacks, to regulating domestic animal businesses. It also highlights proactive programs such as responsible pet ownership," John said.
With 11,011 dogs and 3,221 cats currently registered in East Gippsland, this plan directly impacts thousands of local households - and we want to make sure the plan reflects the needs of our entire community. Whether you're a pet parent, an animal lover, or simply someone who enjoys our shared public spaces, your feedback will help us build a safer, more pet-friendly East Gippsland.
