Showcasing lifeguard skills

The Pool Lifeguard Challenge involved more than seven hours of gruelling competition at Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre. Participants were pitted against one another in a range of events including simulated emergency incidents, medical treatments, and people management scenarios that put their real-world water safety and rescue skills to the test.

The annual event is an opportunity for some friendly, fun and fierce competition, and provides a valuable platform for team-based learning, developing critical thinking and professional growth. Life Saving Victoria Senior Manager - Aquatic Industry Services Alek Olszewski said the event was a fantastic success.

"It was terrific to see our pool lifeguards demonstrating their capabilities, and I congratulate and thank all involved for the outstanding efforts we saw today. On top of being a lot of fun, the event is key to helping our lifeguards keep their skills sharp and fresh so they're rescue-ready to keep our community safe in the water," Mr. Olszewski said.

Recognising lifeguard excellence

This year, LifeTec Rescue Training Manikins supported the event by awarding a Ruth Lee Manikin to Aquarena Aquatic and Leisure Centre in Templestowe Lower for achieving the best performance in the deep-water retrieval event, recognising excellence in rescue skill and technique.
