Wellington Shire Council has welcomed an announcement of $10 million from the State Government for extra flood recovery funding for Gippsland.

"The response from the State Government during this flood emergency has been terrific," said Cr Beth Ripper, Mayor of Wellington Shire Council.

"We must give them credit for their prompt response at the time of the flood.

"It showed a true understanding of the scale and devastation of the floods.

"At the time they also said they would continue to listen and support local communities once the full damage had been assessed" said Cr Ripper.

"With repair and restoration works now well under way, it is apparent that the full cost of the flood will be even higher than first expected.

"We welcome this extra support from the State Government and their continued concern during the clean-up and recovery process," said Cr Ripper.

The Wellington Shire suffered significant damage during the floods. In addition to personal property losses by many residents, major damage was caused to several bridges and many kilometres of roads. Other Council losses included recreation facilities and park equipment.

"With some areas of the Shire still under water it is clear that even more damage is likely to be revealed before this is event is completely over," said Cr Ripper.

To date, Wellington Shire Council’s flood recovery work has included:

• Significant help and support to affected residents

• Clean up of Dargo, Licola, Newry, Sale and coastal areas including Loch Sport, Golden Beach & Seaspray

• Re-instated road access in most flooded areas

• Temporary fords at Wombat & Barkly

• Repair of Hagan’s & Harkins bridges

• Restored access to Licola, High Country & National Parks in conjunction with Vic Roads

• Infrastructure Restoration Manager recruited

• Tenders for major road reconstruction and bridge replacement are currently being processed
