A commercial mooring licence has been granted on the Brodribb River at Marlo, paving the way for a new marine tourism experience in East Gippsland. The licence allows for a 12-metre sailing catamaran to be moored at the site when not in operation. The commercial vessel will offer guided sailing experiences along the Snowy River estuary and surrounding waterways, providing visitors with a unique way to explore the stunning natural environment of one of Australia’s most iconic rivers.

The mooring location is east of the recreational fishing platform, ensuring continued public access to the area. Passenger pick-up and drop-off will occur at other public jetties, meaning there will be no impact on car parking spaces at the boat ramp. The licensee is responsible for ensuring that the infrastructure remains safe and suitable for both the vessel and the surrounding environment, having provided detailed assessments that have addressed key areas raised during consultation.

Supporting commercial activation of marine-based activities is an important step for Marlo, where such experiences are currently not available. Considering transitioning economies and the need to strengthen the visitor economy, the granting of this licence creates new opportunities for economic growth, diversifies the local tourism offering, and helps position the region as a vibrant destination for nature and adventure.
