East Gippsland Shire Mayor, Harvey Bates, is urging local residents to support the forthcoming Gippsland Lakes Swim Challenge by Tammy van Wisse.

By news@gippsland - 21st May 2004 - Back to News

"On Sunday, 6 June Tammy will be putting East Gippsland on the map with her marathon swim from Bairnsdale to Lakes Entrance," Cr Bates said.

"We should all get behind her and support her in some way - give her encouragement at the start, during the swim or at the finish.

"It will be an amazing effort to complete the swim in the time she has planned, particularly in winter.

"Tammy will not only be promoting the Gippsland Lakes, but also alerting people to the current condition of the waterway," Cr Bates said.

Council, which has been assisting Tammy in her preparation for the event, will host a function for sponsors straight after her swim, at Bellevue in Lakes Entrance.

This will be followed by a fundraising dinner in support of East Gippsland Coast Action / Coast Care, also at the Bellevue, and this will be open to the public.

Tammy’s swim program is yet to be confirmed due to the unpredictable nature of winds or flooding conditions, however, she is expected to commence at 6.30am in the Mitchell River, Bairnsdale, at the Old Butter Factory Jetty. She will then follow the Mitchell into Lake King, to Metung, then in to Reeves Channel before finishing on Bullock Island, Lakes Entrance.

Total distance is 40 kilometres and Tammy expects it to take her approximately 10 hours.

She will have a large support crew on both land and water, among them Australian swimming icon Dawn Fraser.

"We’re extremely pleased that Tammy chose the Gippsland Lakes for her next marathon swim challenge," Cr Bates said.

"She’s well known throughout Australia and the world – having conquered the English Channel, New Zealand’s Cook Strait, Manhattan Island’s Marathon Swim and the length of the Murray River.

"Tammy’s endurance qualities are matched by her continual drive to raise awareness on environmental issues relating to water quality and she will campaign this when she’s here.

"We’re also expecting a large media contingent, including the international Discovery Channel, to be part of the event.

"It would be fantastic to see large crowds at Bairnsdale when she starts and Lakes Entrance when she finishes, plus other support along the way, because Tammy and also Dawn are putting the Gippsland Lakes on the map with their efforts," Cr Bates said.
