Council supports holiday road safety initiative

A portable speed observation sign commissioned by Wellington Shire Council will soon be stationed at various points around the Shire as part of a campaign to encourage sensible driving during this year’s holiday season.

By Wellington Shire Council - 2nd December 2003 - Back to News

From the first week in December motorists will be able to spot the sign at various locations around the Shire including Rosedale, Heyfield, Yarram, Maffra, Stratford and Sale. The equipment comprises a large trailer and digital display board, and clocks the speed of passing vehicles, acting as an encouragement for motorists to slow down where appropriate and to reduce the risk of accidents.

The device is a measurement tool only and not a speed camera, so will not result in speeding tickets being issued.

The project is a joint initiative involving Wellington and East Gippsland Shires and Roadsafe East Gippsland, and promotes safe driving practices throughout Wellington.

Said Wellington Shire Mayor John Jago: "Wellington Shire wants to work in partnership with all road users throughout the holiday season to reduce the road toll.

Wellington is the gateway to many popular holiday destinations and this results in a large increase in traffic passing through the Shire in the summer months. This speed observation sign is a tangible tool for managing traffic and makes motorists more conscious of their speed."
