Latrobe City Receives Funding For Youth Safety Forums

Latrobe City Council has received a $2000 National Youth Week grant from the Victorian Coalition Government.

The funding will be used to contribute to organising a Community Safety Forum - Taking Responsibility: ‘Empowering People to Act, Young People and Risk Taking Behaviour’ to be held at the GippsTAFE Academy in Traralgon on Wednesday 18 April from 9am.

The National Youth Week runs from 13 to 22 April and the grants are a joint partnership between the Victorian Coalition Government, the Federal Government and youthbeyondblue.

Member for Morwell, Russell Northe MP said that funding the forum was an important way for the wider community to work with young people to find ways to reduce risk taking behaviour.

"Our funding will enable Latrobe City Council to work with local agencies, community groups and young people to promote positive practices that actively reduce the risk taking behaviour of young people. Young people need to understand what the risks are and the consequences of those risks and to understand the potential impacts of undertaking the particular behaviours.

"I would encourage young people and their parents, as well as agencies and organisations working with young people to get behind this initiative and attend the forum. National Youth Week is about celebrating young people, their successes and achievements, their differences and their potential and this forum is one way of giving local youth a voice," Mr Northe said.

Latrobe City mayor, Councillor Ed Vermeulen, said that the forum would have a particular focus on cyber safety, an issue that is topical.

"We need to educate young people on ways to modify their behaviour, both online and in the real world. There are a number of new initiatives in this field that have had proven success in changing attitudes and the forum will be a great way of outlining these methods.

"Our Youth Council and Youth Leadership Program participants will contribute towards organising the forum. We recognise the importance of engaging with them and including them in the delivery of this event," Cr Vermeulen said.

"We value our young people in Latrobe City as we understand that they are the future. We also have a duty to encourage other organisations in the municipality to understand the issues that young people face and the way in which they like to be engaged," Cr Vermeulen said.
