Last weekend, Mayor Cr Jodie Ashworth had the pleasure to attend Surf Life Saving Lakes Entrance’s presentation night last weekend and see that contribution celebrated firsthand. The lifesaving club plays a significant role in our community, not only in terms of patrols of our beaches in summer months, but training, developing young people, fundraising and holding competitions, and providing a focal point for the community to connect.

A real highlight on the night was seeing our Parks and Gardens Coordinator; Dave Richardson receive both his Life Membership and National Service Award. Even the club president remarked that he calls Dave "The Mayor" because of how much he knows about both the club and the community - so it only seemed fitting that the two "Mayors" grabbed a photo together!

Congratulations, Dave - a genuinely lovely person whose commitment to volunteering across many organisations (and many years) and supporting our region is clearly admired by so many.

Kath Smith says she supports communities beyond work, using her emergency service experience to assist VicSES volunteers and remote communities

Kath Smith

This National Volunteer Week, we’re celebrating the people who help keep our small communities connected, active and thriving. Wednesday 20 May was Wear Orange Wednesday, when we spotlight the incredible SES volunteers who give their time, skills and care to support communities through emergencies and natural disasters. Among them is our Manager of Community Resilience and Emergency Management, Kath Smith, who volunteers with VicSES alongside her role at Council.

"I like to support the community outside of work as well and use all my years of training and experience as a paid Emergency Service worker to support volunteers and communities wherever VicSES may send me. Remote communities depend so much on volunteers, emergency service agencies would be lost without them," said Kath.

Thank you to Kath (who also volunteers across a range of other community and sporting organisations), and to every SES volunteer, for the vital role you play in keeping communities safe.

Rick Watt

One of those people is Rick Watt, Council's Building Maintenance Assets and Facilities Officer, whose long-running contribution to local cricket has helped shape opportunities for young players across East Gippsland.

Rick has coached juniors at the Lucknow Cricket Club for around 10 years and has also served as the club’s junior coordinator for the past few years. During that time, Lucknow has won four of the past five Under 16 premierships - a reflection of the strong junior culture built by volunteers like Rick.

Beyond the club level, Rick has also volunteered with the Bairnsdale Cricket Association as a committee member, junior Gippsland Cricket League, as Gippsland Cricket League coordinator and representative junior coach for around six years – and he’s still actively involved today.

Council thanks Rick, and all of the volunteers who help keep our towns, clubs and community groups thriving. John Waller has strengthened Paynesville for over 50 years through Lions Club and Legacy Australia, continuing his family’s long-standing volunteer tradition

John Waller has strengthened Paynesville for over 50 years through Lions Club and Legacy Australia, continuing his family’s long-standing volunteer tradition

John Waller

For more than five decades, John Waller has been quietly helping make Paynesville a stronger, more connected community. John has dedicated 52 years to the Paynesville Lions Club and more than two decades to Legacy Australia, continuing a family connection that began with his father, a retired serviceman involved with Legacy. "My father was in Legacy as a returned serviceman, helping widows and children of deceased war veterans," John said.

For John, volunteering has always been about community, friendship and giving something back. "You feel as though you’re doing something for the community," he said. "I get a lot of satisfaction out of it. I’ve met a lot of great friends over the years."

From running the monthly Paynesville market to community barbecues and local events, John says volunteering has created lifelong friendships and a strong sense of camaraderie. "We have a lot of fun here in Paynesville. We’re a good, friendly bunch here. Despite the recognition, John is humble about his contribution, saying volunteers rarely seek praise for what they do. "I’m very honoured. You don’t look for recognition in these things," he said.

He is also quick to acknowledge the work of other volunteer groups across East Gippsland, including CFA members and emergency service volunteers who dedicate their time helping others. John's extraordinary contribution has been recognised through his inclusion on the East Gippsland Volunteer Honour Roll.

John hopes his story encourages more people to get involved in their local community - especially this week - Australia’s National Volunteer Week. "Every small town needs volunteers," he said. "Join a club, join a volunteer group, join the Paynesville Lions Club - just help your community."

Reading for Kids

As we celebrate National Volunteer Week and this year’s theme, "Your Year to Volunteer," Mayor Cr Jodie Ashworth acknowledged the incredible contribution of Reading for Kids and Teens Gippsland and the volunteers who help foster a love of reading across East Gippsland.

Mayor Ashworth said, "Through their support of our libraries, more than 80 book review videos have been created this year alone, encouraging children and families to discover and borrow books from our libraries. Over the past four years, the group has produced more than 400 videos promoting reading and literacy across our region.

For four of the past five years, the group has also helped ensure every primary-aged child across East Gippsland receives a Children’s Book Council of Australia bookmark featuring the 36 shortlisted books. One of those shortlisted titles is The Thing About Christmas by Jo Dabrowski and illustrator Briony Stewart – a warm and joyful picture book capturing the wonder of Christmas through a child’s eyes.

"I encourage families to visit their local libraries to explore the CBCA shortlisted books and continue celebrating stories, literacy and community connection," she said. See the video from the Reading for Kids Facebook page.
