Active Participation Grants Available

East Gippsland Shire Council is encouraging community organisations with a sports or active recreation focus, to consider applying for an Active Participation Grant from VicHealth.

Shire Recreation Planner, Al Campbell, said guidelines and application forms are now available for grants of up to $3,000 (local grants) and up to $30,000 for partnership grants.

"Grants will be allocated for projects happening in 2005, with applications closing on 16 July 2004," Al said.

"They aim to encourage community based organisations to think outside the square to get people who, for whatever reason, would not otherwise take part in regular physical activity.

"East Gippsland community organisations are encouraged to work together to make the most out of the resources and knowledge available in their community.

"Everyone can play a part in identifying and removing barriers to participation for every person in the community, regardless of their age, cultural background or ability," Al said.

VicHealth Chief Executive Officer, Dr Rob Moodie, said physical activity is good for a person’s mental health.

"Evidence shows isolation can lead to depression and to serious health problems including heart disease, but social networks help you stay healthy," Dr Moodie said.

More information, guidelines and application forms can be obtained from the website www.vichealth.vic.gov.au, or contact Al Campbell at the Shire.
