Wellington Shire Council shares in Gippsland's disappointment that the 2026 Commonwealth Games planned for regional Victoria were cancelled last week. Council, led by Mayor Ian Bye is working closely with state government Ministers and representatives to advocate for its fair share of investment and funding allocated to Gippsland. "It is important that the Victorian government acknowledges the economic loss that will be felt all throughout Gippsland, and not just the regional centres declared as host 'cities', " Cr Bye said.

"I am looking forward to meeting with the government in Wellington in the coming weeks to ensure our priorities are heard, and support aligns with what our community needs," he concluded,
