West Gippsland and Latrobe Valley score $347,914 towards new sporting facilities

Funding for more accessible sports and recreational facility upgrades for the community.

Three sporting facilities in West Gippsland and the Latrobe Valley are among 73 projects to score a share in $22 million from the Victorian Government’s 2021 Local Sports Infrastructure Fund.

Shovel-ready community

With overwhelming demand for shovel-ready community sports infrastructure across Victoria, the fund is supporting projects across five categories including:

  • Better Indoor Stadiums
  • Female Friendly Facilities
  • Community Sports Lighting, Facilities for Active Seniors
  • Scoreboards and Fixed Equipment

Member for Eastern Victoria Harriet Shing today announced that the George Bates Reserve – Netball Pavilion has scored $188,914 towards the construction of a change pavilion for netball at the George Bates Reserve in Yallourn North including two change rooms, umpire change facility, storage, First Aid Room and Accessible toilet with shower and baby change facility.

Funding inclusions

Other venues to receive funding include:

  • $134,000 for the Trafalgar Bowls Club’s Synthetic Rink Upgrade Project
  • $25,000 for the Neerim South Digital Scoreboard Project

From new LED sports lighting installations to new indoor multi-sport courts, investments like these provide high-quality and accessible places for more Victorians to secure the benefits of participating in sport and active recreation.

Sports and recreational investment

Minister for Community Sport Ros Spence also announced that the next round of the Local Sports Infrastructure Fund will open later this year, with up to $27 million available - including $10 million for female friendly facilities. The Victorian Government has invested more than $1.1 billion in community sport and recreation infrastructure since 2014.

The Local Sports Infrastructure Fund is also a key component of the government’s suite of community sport and active recreation infrastructure investment programs including the World Game Facilities Fund, Community Cricket Program, Community Motorsport Program, Community Sports Infrastructure Loans Scheme and the popular Community Sports Infrastructure Stimulus Program. Ms Shing acknowledged Baw Baw Shire Council and Latrobe City Council for their commitment and financial contribution to the project.
