Council to explore best options for accommodation in Port Albert

Wellington Shire Council has resolved to lease the Port Albert Caravan Park for a further two years while it explores opportunities to redevelop the area and investigates potential sites for its relocation.

There has been significant interest from the local community to have the land used as park land. However there is also concern at the potential loss of a caravan park which brings economic advantages to the area.

Possibilities include making the land available for community use or utilising it to introduce a range of tourist accommodation that will be consistent with the long-term strategies set-out in Wellington Shire Council’s Port Albert Master Plan and Development Opportunities.

The council will use this two year period to identify options for the use of this prime foreshore land which will be of maximum benefit the local community and economy.

This redevelopment proposal is consistent with a commitment given to the residents of Port Albert by previous councils which this council has indicated it will uphold.

Said Wellington’s Chief Executive Officer Lyndon Webb: "The council is currently investigating how it can maintain a caravan park presence in this popular coastal town in light of the rapid rise in land values. We are looking at all possible site options within close proximity of the town that a private operator may wish utilise as an alternate park site.

"The council is very conscious of the variety of outcomes that the members of the Port Albert community wish to see achieved over the next few years and is taking this period to consider the options and to discuss them with the community.

"A hasty decision at this time may not yield the best outcome for Port Albert and so the council intends to continue to support the use of the foreshore site for a caravan park as it plans for the future of this vital and developing coastal town."
