Venus Bay skate park and basketball court, managed by council and Precision Skate Parks, is now open
New Skate Park in Venus Bay
The new Venus Bay skate park and half basketball court is now open to the public, just in time for Easter and the school holidays. Project managed by council and constructed by Precision Skate Parks, the design features numerous curved bank sections with elements including various sized quarter pipes, rainbow rail, flat bank and concrete seating areas. Temporary fencing is still in place but will be removed after Easter. Landscaping works, a small retaining wall, and footpath installation will also be carried out in the coming weeks.
The adjacent carpark is also expected to be reconstructed as part of the Venus Bay Tourism Precinct project, and at this stage the majority of the car park remains open, aside from the loop section. Please note the safety guidelines and signage located in the skate park area. The new facility is located in Jupiter Boulevard Park in Venus Bay.
The Great Southern Rail Trail Extension was opened last Saturday, spanning 107 km with supporting events
Great Southern Rail Trail
Last Saturday the Great Southern Rail Trail Extension between Nyora and Leongatha was officially opened. The opening and ribbon cutting were held at the Loch railway station with speeches by the Hon Harriet Shing, Minister for Water, Regional Development and Equality and South Gippsland Shire Council Mayor, Nathan Hersey. The 36km extension was a substantial project which required rail removal, gravel placement, drainage, rail crossings, new bridges, bridge decks and railings. The extension opening means that the trail now spans an impressive 107 km between Nyora and Port Welshpool, with an additional extension currently underway between Alberton and Welshpool.
The ribbon cutting was just one part of the day however, with supporting events also held in many towns along the trail between Nyora and Leongatha. The Nyora Men's Shed kicked off the celebrations by hosting an egg and bacon breakfast in Nyora, which was then followed by a 'search for clues' activity in Loch coordinated by the Loch Community Development Association.
Event itinerary highlights
The event program then moved on to Jeetho with scones and sandwiches by the Jeetho Hall Committee, a historical display in Bena by the Bena Hall Committee, a sausage sizzle lunch in Korumburra thanks to the Lions Club of Korumburra, a delicious afternoon tea in the Ruby Hall hosted by the Ruby Hall Committee and the Kardella Country Women's Association and finish line festivities by the Leongatha Business Association.
Approximately 200 people participated in the event, with around half undertaking the whole 36km. Most participants cycled, although there were also some walkers who did smaller sections and a handful who walked or ran the entire length. One such walker was Cornelis De Vos, pictured below holding the 'walk' sign. Cornelis started in Nyora and walked through to Leongatha, finishing a little after 4.00pm - a tremendous effort for anyone but particularly impressive for someone in his late eighties! Well done Cornelis.
