Council hosts cultural competency training for youth workersCouncil supports youth workers with a day-long workshop. By Portal Admin - 9th December 2017 - Back to News Bass Coast Shire Council recently hosted a day-long workshop exploring how to support young refugees and people from a migrant background.
The workshop was delivered by the Centre for Multicultural Youth (CMY) as part of their commitment to support youth services working with young people and was coordinated by Council.
Bass Coast Mayor, Cr Pamela Rothfield, explained thatCouncil is dedicated to working with youth services and community groups to support young people from migrant and refugee backgrounds.
"The workshop was a great way to support professional development across the youth sector and improve outcomes for our community,"Cr Rothfield said.
Workshop participants included SalvoCare, Max Employment, the Bass Coast South Gippsland Local Learning Emplyoment Network and Bass Coast Adult Education Centre.
CMY’s Sector Support and Youth Leadership Coordinator, Linette Harriot, congratulated those who participated in the event.
"It was an exciting opportunity to work with a wide range of services who work with multicultural young people," Mrs Harriot said.
"We used stories, case studies and a range of methods to discuss the skills, knowledge and attitudes required to work in culturally competent ways"
The workshop was designed to help participants explore concepts of culture and identity and identify factors that affect settlement for young people from refugee and migrant backgrounds.
