Bass Coast Shire Council has officially opened the Sunset Strip Bike Jump Park delivering an exciting new space for riders of all ages and abilities on Phillip Island. The track was officially opened today, with local students, Councillors, members of the Bass Coast Mountain Bike Association, contractors and Council staff coming together to celebrate the milestone - with plenty of excitement from young riders from local schools keen to be among the first to hit the trails.

New riding trails

Located in the Council road reserve at the intersection of Phillip Island Road and Back Beach Road—the turn‑off to the MotoGP circuit and Penguin Parade - the small triangular reserve has been transformed into a purpose‑built riding destination. The project marks an important milestone as the first project delivered from Council’s Mountain Bike, BMX and Pump Track Strategy, following the adoption of the strategy in August 2024 and implementation planning completed in 2025.

Bass Coast Mayor, Cr Brett Tessari said the new trails are a fantastic example of what can be achieved when Council works closely with the community. "How good is this? A proper spot for locals and visitors to get out, get active and have a bit of fun on two wheels."

"Whether you’re just starting out or chasing something a bit more adventurous, there’s something here for everyone. We just ask people to ride respectfully, look after the space and enjoy everything our great outdoors has to offer. These trails show what’s possible when you team up with passionate local groups and get on with delivering for the community," Cr Tessari said.

Sunset strip trails

The Sunset Strip site was selected as an early project due to its accessible location connected to the existing shared pathway, the presence of informal trails, and its native vegetation, with a cleared central area providing a natural starting point for trail development. The completed design includes three purpose‑built trails, each with its own character and story:

  • Sunset Blvd (Beginner) - A smooth, welcoming entry‑level trail named with a nod to the Hollywood‑style flair of the Sunset Strip hamlet
  • Ice Box (Intermediate) - A tribute to the legends of earlier generations of riders and trail builders. Local lore says an old fridge once sat here and formed the foundation of a jump
  • Express (Advanced) - Fast, unforgiving and not for the faint‑hearted. Just like the local surf break, this trail reflects the raw energy and skill of Phillip Island’s riders and surfers

The site also includes landscaping, fencing and signage, with space set aside for future planting and ongoing site improvements. More than 800 cubic metres of fill, along with granitic sand and topsoil, were used to shape the trails, with additional planting to be delivered in partnership with Landcare in coming months. The trails were constructed by Local Trail Co, with support from local contractor Pete Sund, delivering a high‑quality facility for around $80,000.

Community built park

The project was delivered in close partnership with the Bass Coast Mountain Bike Association, whose input helped shape a design that caters to riders of all skill levels. Council also worked closely with neighbouring residents, who came along for the journey and helped ensure the trails would be a positive addition to the area.

Visitors are encouraged to make the most of the park’s strong local connections by riding to the facility, with the shared path network providing easy access from towns such as Cowes and San Remo - a great way to enjoy the journey as much as the destination.

For those driving, please help support the surrounding community by parking in designated bays along Vision Circuit. If these are full, additional parking is available along Phillip Island Service Road or at the Sunset Strip Reserve car park at the end of the road. Council officers will be monitoring the area, and vehicles parked on nature strips or grassed embankments may be subject to fines.
