Martin Cameron says Yallourn job cuts devastate workers and mark first blow in Power Station closure

Up to 40 Yallourn Power Station jobs will be cut by 2025, sparking concern from Martin Cameron over Labor's failure to support the Latrobe Valley through the energy transition.

Up to 40 jobs will be cut at the Yallourn Power Station before the end of 2025 in the first round of job losses as the station prepares for closure in 2028. Overburden operations will finish on 31 December, leading to the loss of contractor roles that have existed at Yallourn for more than 100 years.

Valley faces closure

The Nationals' Member for Morwell, Martin Cameron, said the job losses were "the first blow" for the Yallourn workforce ahead of its closure in three years. "This news is devastating for workers, their families, and the Latrobe Valley community given that for every job lost at the power station there are at least three indirect job losses."

"The Latrobe Valley has powered the state for more than a century, and we are now feeling the very real impact of the accelerated closure of our coal-fired power stations. The Allan Labor Government has had 11 years to prepare our community for the transition to renewables, and for 11 years it has done absolutely nothing."

"The Latrobe Valley has been completely neglected in talks about transition, despite being ground zero for energy generation. This sustained neglect of the very region that will be hit hardest by this rushed transition is a complete failure of government," Mr Cameron said.

Valley ignored policy

Mr Cameron hosted Monash economics student, Skye Blackshaw, last semester as part of the Victorian Parliamentary Internship program. As part of her research into the impending closure of the Valley's coal-fired power stations, Skye was able to confirm what many of us have been screaming from the rooftop for years.

One of Skye's findings was: The Latrobe Valley is not the focus of any government policy causing its specific needs through the energy transition to be overlooked, despite being Gippsland's most disadvantaged region.

"Jacinta Allan and Minister for Energy, Lily D'Ambrosio, are hell-bent on ripping out the industrial heart of our region - all without a single policy or plan to replace the thousands of jobs, and without a single policy or plan for our future after coal. Labor can't manage money, can't manage the energy transition, and Latrobe Valley residents are paying the price," Mr Cameron said.
