Latrobe City Council is calling for the community’s help to report abandoned shopping trolleys to keep our environment clean and safe.

"They can pose a hazard to pedestrians and road users and are unsightly in our parks and reserves. They can also have an environmental impact if they enter drains and waterways. We are asking that members of our community make a concerted effort to report trolleys when they see them out and about, as customers ultimately bear the cost when retailers are forced to replace abandoned trolleys. And, of course, ratepayers eventually pay too when Council has to retrieve trolleys from waterways, roads and other locations and can only charge a small impound fee," Cr O’Callaghan said.

"Community members can report trolleys using online trolley tracking services and apps, or telephone numbers, depending on the retailer. There is even a reward of $1000 randomly drawn on a monthly basis for customers who have reported abandoned trolleys to selected trolley collection services.

"There is a small pocket of our community that does the wrong thing by not returning the trolleys they’ve used and some who deliberately go out of their way to dump trolleys in creeks or other waterways. However, the vast majority cares about the environment and the amenity of their neighbourhood. Let’s work together to rid our streets, parks and waterways of dumped trolleys," Cr O’Callaghan concluded.
