Wellington welcomes $3 million funding boost for roads and bridges

Wellington Shire Council welcomes the State Government’s announcement that it will be pumping more than $3 million into major road and bridge improvement projects in the Shire over the coming year.

By Wellington Shire Council - 8th July 2003 - Back to News

The announcement by Transport Minister Peter Bachelor coincided with VicRoads’ triennial briefing of the Chief Executive Officer and senior officers from the Council on road and bridge issues, when its Deputy Chief Executive Officer Peter Balfe took the opportunity to outline the specific projects to benefit:

  • $2 million funding to replace the old timber bridge on the Briagolong Road at Blackall Creek, and the Benambra-Corryong Road Bridge at Morass in north east Gippsland;
  • $465,000 to begin an upgrade of the Jamieson Licola Road which is currently in poor condition – this follows a submission from the Council and will improve the road for the local community, logging trucks and tourists travelling to north eastern Victoria;
  • $600,000 to strengthen and widen the Hyland Highway Bridge at Flynn’s Creek, and to install new safety barriers.

The meeting provided the chance to discuss a number of major issues of particular importance to the Shire such as continuation of the Roads to Recovery Program, the proposed State Road Management Bill and progress on the restoration of the Swing Bridge in Sale. Indeed work is expected to commence on the first phase of the bridge’s in September and last approximately four months.

In addition the Council welcomed the announcement of a $35 million package of initiatives to provide safer roads throughout the State, especially in country Victoria. A major component will be the introduction of Arrive Alive! School Zones, which will see reduced speed limits introduced outside every primary and secondary school in the State within the next two years. Also nearly $11 million of this funding will be directed into the provision of tactile road edge lining in rural areas, shoulder sealing, crash barriers and roadside hazard removal on country roads.

Said Wellington’s Chief Executive Officer Lyndon Webb: "We’re delighted with the State Government’s announced funding, particularly as roads were highlighted by the local community as a priority to be tackled during our Community Satisfaction Survey earlier in the year.

"We appreciate what’s being done by VicRoads to improve road safety across the Shire, in particular the introduction of reduced speed limits outside our schools."
