Shire Mosquito Control Trial

East Gippsland Shire Council, in conjunction with Bairnsdale Golf Club and Queensland based chemical manufacturer FMC, is pleased with the initial results of new mosquito control product trial.

The trial commenced on 6 January and is having a huge impact on mosquito numbers at the golf course.

"Mosquitoes at times plague the Bairnsdale golf course along with residents in the region and this new product, Bistar appears to provide an opportunity to provide relief," said Shire Environmental Officer, Ian Bate.

"The trial has seen mosquito numbers drop by 85-90 per cent in the treated area, compared with other areas on the golf course.

"Although it is still early days for the trial, the results are very encouraging.

"It is expected, based on similar trials conducted in Queensland, that the product will continue to provide relief for two to three months," Ian said.

The initiative for this latest mosquito control program surfaced from the national release of Bistar, following documentation of results from Queensland based trials.

East Gippsland Shire Council liaised with Dr Michael Brown, from FMC, to visit the region and provide an insight into the product’s capability.

Bistar conforms to all the latest EPA requirements. The product is applied to vegetation, fences, walls, under eaves or any other areas likely to foster mosquitoes.

"Mosquitoes, when harbouring in these places, receive a lethal dose of the product and this drastically reduces the local mosquito population in the treated area," Dr Brown said.

"The product is very effective against mosquitoes even in localised use. It is ideal for use around houses and gardens as well as for other outdoor areas and business premises," he said.

An information session for licensed local pest control businesses was conducted recently to provide an insight into the trial and the product’s capability.

"The pest controllers were impressed with the results and intend to offer the treatment as part of their business service," Ian said.

Residents interested in using the product should contact East Gippsland Shire Council or a local pest control company for further information.
