Detox Your Home – Free Household Chemical Collection

East Gippsland Shire is offering residents the opportunity to rid their homes of unwanted household chemicals this Saturday.

Organised in partnership with Sustainability Victoria, the Detox Your Home program is intended to help residents dispose of their old and unwanted chemicals in an environmentally responsible way.

Acceptable chemicals are those used for household purposes and don’t include others used for farm, industrial and commercial applications.

Household chemicals in containers up to 20 litres in size can be taken to the rear of the Shire’s Corporate Centre, Bairnsdale on Saturday, 25 February between 8.00am to 11.00am for safe disposal. Access is from MacLeod Street.

Chemicals accepted for disposal include:

· Aerosol cans, insect sprays, pest poisons, household cleaners, pharmaceuticals, mothballs and old smoke detectors.

· Garden fertilisers, fungicides, herbicides and insecticides.

· Automotive chemicals including transmission fluids, batteries and battery acid, brake fluid, car wax solvent, fuels (such as petrol, diesel, kerosene) and oils (including motor and sump oils).

· Workshop chemicals including paint strippers, solvent-based glues, water and oil-based paints, paint thinner, acetone, turpentine, varnish and wood preservative.

· Miscellaneous chemicals such as acids and alkalis, artists' paints and supplies, photographic chemicals, fibreglass resins (not mixed), extinguishers, gas cylinders, safety ammunition, swimming pool chemicals and mercury batteries.

Safety measures that should be taken when bringing chemicals to the Shire office.

· Ensuring lids are tightly fitted.

· Placing liquids on a tray or in a plastic bucket so any spills are contained

· Packing powders and solids securely.

· Keeping corrosive chemicals, such as battery acid, away from poisons.

· Keeping oxidising agents, such as peroxide, away from all other materials.

· Travelling with car windows down if carrying flammable or odorous materials.

Double-wrapping old liquid containers in plastic bags to prevent leaking.
