At its ordinary meeting of 7 February, Latrobe City Council resolved to seek Expressions of Interest for a developer/operator for the Gippsland Logistics Precinct (GLP) in Morwell, Gippsland.

Latrobe City Council’s mayor, Councillor Darrell White, said that the GLP was a new industrial estate designed to accommodate businesses that use rail to transport their products.

"Located in south-eastern Victoria, the site is unique, in that it will integrate the manufacturing and transport infrastructure required by many organisations. The site will stimulate new business activity within the region, create jobs and encourage private sector investment. It also has the potential to diversify employment opportunities as we transition to a low carbon future.

"One of Latrobe City Council’s key strategic actions is to promote and support the development of existing and new industry and infrastructure to enhance the social and economic well-being of the Latrobe Valley. Developing the GLP aligns perfectly with this action, along with Federal and Victorian State Government projections of increased freight movements and the requirements for capacity to move the freight," Cr White said.

Cr White acknowledged his fellow councillors, Cr Bruce Lougheed and Cr Graeme Middlemiss, for their work as members of the Rail Freight Working Group for helping bring the project this far.

Cr Lougheed explained that in 2004, Latrobe City Council acquired the site to be used to accommodate rail-focused industry, specifically to develop a logistics precinct to service the Latrobe Valley and the Gippsland region.

"The site is made up of two distinct but integrated components. One is immediately adjacent to the main Gippsland Line between Princes Freeway and Tramway Road, Morwell known as the Gippsland Intermodal Freight Terminal (GIFT). The other is a 64 hectare area of land immediately adjacent to the GIFT and also located between the Princes Freeway and Tramway Road behind the Mid Valley commercial centre.

"We know there is a great demand for logistic services to be re-established from the precinct. A Project Implementation Plan has been developed and the lease for the Gippsland Intermodal Freight Terminal has been secured by Council," Cr Lougheed said.

Cr Middlemiss said the scale of the project had the potential to attract business and organisations from anywhere in Australia.

"We are looking for interested parties from around Australia who recognise the potential of this project and who can open up the business potential of this region. Since the Port of Melbourne will be readily accessible via rail, the Gippsland Logistics Precinct has the opportunity to become the gateway to the world for businesses in our region.

"Expressions of Interest close on 1 July 2011 and the tender process is expected to commence in August. We hope to appoint a developer or site operator in November," Cr Middlemiss concluded.

Expressions of Interest will be received by Council until 1 July 2011. For further information in relation to the Expression of Interest, please contact Donna Starkey at Latrobe City Council on 1300 367 700.
