Mark Latham bypasses Wellington in Gippsland tour

Wellington Shire Council is disappointed that the Federal Labor Leader Mark Latham is not including Wellington in his tour of Gippsland this week.

By Wellington Shire Council - 30th April 2004 - Back to News

Said the council’s Chief Executive Officer Lyndon Webb: "This is Mark Latham’s second visit to Gippsland this year and the second time we’ve been inexplicably omitted from his tour itinerary.

"While we appreciate that he’s following a tight schedule, this is nonetheless very disappointing. There are some major issues facing the shire such as funding for roads and bridges, the transfer of the RAAF Officer Training College to East Sale, the impact of the drought, growth pressures along our 90 Mile Beach, our proposed multi-purpose community centre at Rosedale and communications across the shire. These are all of Federal importance and Mr Latham needs to be fully aware of them.

"We believe he is disadvantaging himself by not being aware of these issues and is also letting down the local community by denying them an invaluable and rare opportunity to put their views directly to him on issues they believe to be of significance, and to meet what may possibly be Australia’s next Prime Minister.

"We would encourage Mr Latham to address this oversight and we would be pleased to arrange a fact-finding tour of Wellington for him at the earliest opportunity in the future."
