New footpath along Howitt Avenue and Eastwood Road to make a safer route to school and the shops
East Gippsland Shire Council starts work this week on a new footpath that will provide Eastwood locals with a safer route to school and the shops, and offer a great reason to leave the car at home.
East Gippsland Shire Council's Access and Mobility Plan promotes improved pedestrian safety and a culture of walking. In line with the plan, Council is installing the new footpath along a section of Howitt Avenue and Eastwood Road. The new two-metre-wide path will provide locals with an active and safe route to the school and shopping precincts.

Highway works stage 1
The work on Stage 1 of the project, which will get underway when the site has dried after recent rains, will create a 350-metre stretch of footpath along Howitt Avenue from the Flinns Road roundabout to Eastwood Road intersection. Stage 1 is being funded with $100,000 from council's capital works 2020/21 budget and will take up to six weeks to complete, weather permitting. Works will be undertaken by a local contractor.
Highway works stage 2
Stage 2 will see the continuation of the footpath for 350 metres from the Eastwood Road intersection to the Timbarra Drive intersection. This section will link to a recently completed 635m section of footpath, including a pedestrian bridge, along Eastwood Road through to the Bairnsdale Sporting and Convention Centre that was completed last year.
Sections of the Howitt Avenue nature strip will be closed off for public access during works, but pedestrians will be able to use the nature strip on the other side of the road.
