Council Looks At How We Live With Cats And Dogs

Following extensive community consultation, Bass Coast Shire Council is considering the draft Domestic Animal Management Plan (DAMP) at its meeting on 16 May 2012.

Community and Economic Development Director, Steven Piasente, said this plan sets the direction for the management of dogs and cats in the Shire for the next four years.

"It aims to balance the needs of pets and of pet owners with the amenity of the general community and with environmental issues. One of the issues examined in the plan is the vexed question of dog off leash areas, including on beaches."

Mr Piasente said the plan will establish a way forward on this issue.

"The plan recommends that Council engages with the community to establish the areas which are best suited to be off leash areas, while taking into account other community and environmental demands," explained Mr Piasente.

"Once Council has considered the draft it will be widely distributed for public comment. We anticipate that a finalised version of the plan, taking into account public submissions, will be considered by Council at its July meeting."

As part of the development of the draft DAMP, Council undertook an extensive survey process. 4,800 surveys were distributed to cat and dog owners and non-pet owners, canvassing community feelings around responsible pet ownership issues. A reference group of key industry and community stakeholders was established to workshop issues raised in the survey response.
