Do You Make Bass Coast Beautiful?

Bass Coast Shire Council wants local community groups to nominate community building and beautification projects for the 2012 Keep Australia Beautiful Awards.

By Bass Coast - 30th March 2012 - Back to News

Community and Economic Development Director, Steven Piasente, said people might not realise that the awards were about much more than litter prevention.

"The Keep Australia Beautiful Awards program has grown since it first started 30 years ago and now recognises a wide range of community building and beautification projects. The Awards recognise and celebrate the many different actions that regional Victorian communities have taken action to protect and enhance local environments," said Mr Piasente.

"This year there are 25 categories that can recognise initiatives as diverse as community leadership, preserving cultural and environmental heritage, saving water and energy, increasing recycling in public places and providing friendly, safe and accessible beach facilities. There are also categories to recognise outstanding individual contributions."

Mr Piasente said Council would be nominating some projects it had worked on, to highlight the good work happening across the Shire.

"There is plenty of room for local groups and clubs to enter too. There were several local entries last year including the Phillip Island Landcare Group and the Inverloch Community Planning Group. The Planning Group was the proud winner of two categories in the Tidy Town Awards. It would be great to build on that success with more local entrants, finalists and (hopefully) winners!"

In 2012 there are a total of twenty five categories within the ‘Clean Beaches Award’ and the ‘Tidy Towns-Sustainable Community Award’ streams, so there will be many projects local community groups and committees have been involved with that could be entered in to at least one category.

A single project/initiative can be entered in to multiple categories. Bass Coast Shire Council is a member of the Keep Australia Beautiful organisation so entry for local groups is free.

Nominations for the Clean Beaches Awards close on 11 April. Nominations for the Tidy Towns-Sustainable Community Awards close on 11 May. For information about the awards and Entry Forms, go to www.kabv.org.au or contact Council’s Litter Prevention Officer on 1300 BCOAST(226 278).
