Latrobe City’s Community Plan: Have your say

Latrobe City Council has invited community input to formulate a ‘Community Plan’ which will be used to guide Latrobe City’s hand in local government matters.

By Latrobe City Council - 11th August 2003 - Back to News

Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Graeme Middlemiss said the consultative stage gave everyone in the community the opportunity to have a say in bettering their community and deciding what the key priorities for local government should be.

"Council’s vision is for a vibrant, liveable sustainable community but to give that idea life we need to harness community opinion," Cr Middlemiss said.

"The specific aims of the Community Plan are to address our community’s health, wellbeing and environment but these are subject to a myriad of influences. Together we need to identify the main issues that need attention or enhancing, and then work out the detail that will take us all in the desired direction."

"The Plan needs to establish just what should be done, by whom and when. Naturally, different people will have different ideas and priorities. Latrobe City is interested in receiving input from all community members," Cr Middlemiss said.

"Your ideas may be for the long term or be immediate solutions to identified problems; they may require council’s action or may need input from a particular group in the community," Cr Middlemiss said.

Latrobe City’s Community Plan Project Officer, Jenny Tame said that there were four categories into which each idea would be put.

"The first category is the physical environment or infrastructure and buildings, as well as use of the land and development issues. Then there is the social environment which is how we encourage the people to participate in their community, for example with clubs and sports and other activities.

"The economic environment is about trying to provide employment opportunities for residents whilst finally, the natural environment is about taking care of our environment so that it can continue to thrive and in turn support us," Ms Tame explained.

Ms Tame suggested that getting a group together to discuss ideas, or finding out what your neighbours, friends, family or club associates think about issues may be as good a place as any to start.

To facilitate the Community Plan process, Council is organising three Community Plan forums to held at the Italian Australian Club, Morwell on Tuesday 26 August 2003; the Council Chamber, Citizen Service Centre, Traralgon on Wednesday 27 August 2003 and Moe Town Hall foyer, Moe on Thursday 28 August 2003. Arrival time is 6.30pm for a 7pm start.

"It is envisaged that each forum will be a two hour brainstorming session, during which time we hope to lay down the framework for a community blueprint for the future. This will assist in the further development of Council’s 15 year vision for the City," Ms Tame concluded.

If you want to be involved in the Community Plan, further information is available on the Council’s website (www.latrobe.vic.gov.au). Click on ‘For Residents’ and then ‘Community Plan’. There are suggested questions to answer and an appendix of issues which may be useful starting points to a discussion.

Phone 1300 367 700, write (Latrobe City Council, PO Box 345, Traralgon) or email (jennyta@latrobe.vic.gov.au).
