By Portal Admin - 2nd August 2020 - Back to News

Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Dan Clancey recently chaired the first online meeting between the Youth Council and Latrobe City Council. Now in its 24th year, the Latrobe City Youth Council is believed to be the longest running youth council in Australia.

Latrobe City Council Mayor, Councillor Dan Clancey, said this year the program had nine young and enthusiastic participants to represent the young people of Latrobe City.

"More than ever, this year’s Youth Council participants will be vital to supporting Council’s understanding of the issues young people are experiencing due to the pandemic. They will work with staff to help plan and tailor youth-focused COVID-19 recovery programs and initiatives," Cr Clancey said.

"As well as the specific COVID projects, the Youth Council program has more general aims of developing confidence and personal growth, as well as broader leadership skills, by allowing participants to gain experience in real settings by working with staff and Councillors.

"We’re proud of this program, its inclusivity, its innovation, its enduring nature. Over the years, it has seen dozens of participants take part in important civic activities, plan events, present reports, attend Council meetings, visit conferences and add to their skill sets. It’s a great opportunity for any young person who wants to participate in a meaningful and, importantly, local, youth development program."

For those who may be interested, Cr Clancey said it isn’t too late to get involved, "We’re still recruiting, so if this sounds like something you’d be interested in putting your hand up for, visit our website and complete an Expression of Interest. It’s not too late."

2020 Latrobe City Youth Council Expressions of Interest can be submitted at any time via www.latrobe.vic.gov.au.
